Once dubbed by Sports Illustrated as one of the 20 most
challenging basketball environs in which to play in the nation, the Kibbie Dome
has that look and feel again with the 2001 debut of the Cowan
Spectrum.
The $700,000 Cowan Spectrum includes two Daktronics
scoreboards that hang on the north and south sides of the basketball court. The
truss, lighting grid, and 2,878 yards of curtains create an
“arena-within-an-arena” as the Spectrum comes alive at midfield of the
25-year-old Kibbie Dome football field. The Spectrum provides 7,000-seat
intimate atmosphere and up-close-and-personal feel for UI basketball fans. The
new environment also enhances the practice and competitive surroundings for both
the Men and Women Basketball teams.
The basketball arena is named in honor of Bob and Jan Cowan.
The naming gave UI a chance to pay tribute to the many contributions of the
Richland, Wash., couple.
